Yes, I got to go see La La Land yesterday, I was looking forward to it, as I haven’t been out much recently so shout from the roof top, ooh I could dance my way across the sky in blissful thinking, I just have to get more active and burn all those Christmas calories now. Challenges start on Monday! Anyway back to the film. I had a thing for Ryan in The Notebook, great film and I thought he was a talented actor. Not knowing what to expect, I went there just feeling happy to be seeing a film. What I got was a beautiful love story, amazing piano, and acting. The film is like an old Hollywood classic, which grips you from the word go with colour and the visual images on the screen. The Telegraph said ‘You will leave with a tear in your eye, and a song in your heart’ and to be honest I couldn’t have put it better myself.

Memories came flooding back to me of when I met my hubby. Four months of us both passing each other me on my way home from work, him just tootling off. I remember the day after we met, I said I would visit his design studio, as he had studied furniture design along with graphic design at university. At that time he made furniture and gave art classes. I loved chairs and wanted to go check his place out. I knocked on the green door, and when he opened it, sat there in its glory, was a beautiful upright grand piano, in an industrial setting, and just staring at me. My hubby sat and played for me, and I fell in love. I am not saying my hubby is an experienced pianist, but he could play a tune or two. Twenty years later we are about to celebrate our long marriage with our family. So the fact Ryan plays piano and that is a big part of the film really did leave me with not only a song in my heart, but memories of my past, and a warmth that maybe only a good single malt could compete with.

As I walked in the cinema, I thought only of whether I would still love Ryan Gosling after I heard him sing, (I did, sounded like Harry Connick Jnr, very lovely voice) I never thought about the interiors. My eyes are always drawn to the surroundings of a film, no matter how gripping the acting may be. I still remember the house and interiors in Sleeping with the Enemy, so contemporary for its time! So as I was gazing at the screen, loving the dancing and acting by Emma Stone, and Ryan Gosling, I noticed there were a lot of primary colours being used, and then wow we got taken into Mia’s apartment (Emma Stone). It had so much character, had such a wow factor with gold, and bright colours. Mia’s bedroom has an old Hollywood look, with an Ingrid Bergman poster behind the bed. The living room having a bright red stripe sofa, with blues, and gold, and black and white curtains. I wasn’t expecting to love it but I did.

Red stripe sofa you say really? I know but hear me out. Thinking of what I have been saying for a few weeks of Jewel tones being on trend, and especially gold and brass adding sophisticated glamour, the screen was quite clever in the way it presented us with a colourful focus. I am not going to lie to you, I am not going to rush out and buy a red stripe sofa. Not that I mind anyone doing that, but the look just gave me inspiring ideas of how the old Hollywood glamour is so definitely back! There has been Hollywood glamour racing through magazines, and images, in the likes of drinks trolley’s, velvet sofa’s, gold and brass mirrors, lighting and side tables. I mentioned last week the M&S Luxe revival look, but this is obviously adding more bright colours. You could add bright cushions to your room, which would give an instant La La Land look. Focusing on side tables, lighting and mirrors, adding gold or brass to your room, and adding some old Hollywood style posters, would give it an exciting mix.

So I am taking from the interiors of the film, a visual idea of how to create Mia’s bedroom and see what there is out there on the high street to help you achieve that look! It has a romantic feel with pale blue, but then adding bright colours, in the form of cushions to lift the whole room. Pinks, creams, and then huge splashes of red make this work. An old reclaimed or antique round mirror to pull the whole thing together, and then the final touch a huge Hollywood classic poster to adorn your walls.

allposters.co.uk is a great place to buy an old Hollywood-style poster from. Not very expensive and can order online plus there are some amazing ones to choose from. My favourite being ‘Rebel without a Cause’ There are so many places you can buy red velvet cushions from. The one I loved is from Habitat and priced at £25.00 Dunelm has fab cream cushions that are so reasonable priced at £8.00 Laura Ashley has a lovely pale blue stripe bedding that would fit perfectly into this bedroom look. You could be lucky enough to find a vintage drinks trolley, but they are in real demand now, so I have chosen this one from Graham and Green, it’s a lovely shape and doesn’t take up too much room. You could use it to put all your pretty jewellery things on. Glam side tables are a must in a bedroom like this, I have chosen this very pretty side table from M&S, would just finish the whole room off. This standing Mirror by Rockett St George has a simple elegance and will sit on any dressing table or drawers nicely. Soft lighting would be ideal and I love this wall light from Next that gives a soft glow. My work here is done, I am now going to go listen to the soundtrack, loved it! I am also going to think of what I can learn, thinking how Ryan Gosling learnt to play amazing piano for that role! It’s still January, there is still time to think of a new hobby 🙂 Maybe tap dancing or singing lessons, one thing I am definitely going to do, is catch up on some old Hollywood movies, Doris Day, maybe a bit of Marylin and without a doubt I am going to watch James Dean.

It sounds like you quite enjoyed this film and it’s very sweet that it reminded you of falling in love with your husband. I haven’t seen this yet but would like to, I enjoy both Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Old Hollywood glamour does seem to be making a comeback recently.

I like the interior, especially the sofa. I Wasn’t too fussed on the movie though, it was too long, could have easily have been done in 90 minutes. The ending was awful too. Thanks for sharing

I haven’t seen the film yet but have heard mixed reviews. Critics love it and people that have seen it don’t know what all the fuss is about. Loving those lights in the second picture.
